Al Sullivan, a 56-year-old truck driver, underwent emergency quadruple coronary bypass surgery after a main artery became blocked during evaluation. While under deep general anesthesia with eyes taped shut, he found himself floating above the operating table observing his open chest cavity. He saw his surgeon exhibiting bizarre behavior that appeared to be "flapping his arms as if trying to fly," and observed two other surgeons working on his leg, which puzzled him. During the experience, he was met by his mother who had died nearly fifty years earlier when he was seven. She drifted down to place the surgeon's hand on his heart while Al saw the surgeon make a sweeping motion as if dismissing an insect. He also received troubling knowledge that a neighbor's child had cancer. After surgery, Al confronted his surgeon about the arm-flapping, prompting an angry defensive reaction. Dr. Greyson later interviewed the surgeon who confirmed this unusual habit developed during training in Japan - he would hold sterile hands to his chest and use his elbows to point and gesture to avoid contamination, which from above would appear exactly like flapping. This verification is exceptionally strong as the observation was made while fully anesthetized with eyes taped, completely ruling out conventional sensory explanation.
