Tom Sawyer, a 33-year-old highway department supervisor, was crushed when his four-thousand-pound pickup truck fell on his chest after a jack gave way. He experienced everything in extreme slow motion as the truck frame squeezed all air from his lungs. After his final three heartbeats and a period of blankness, he underwent a total life review with impossible detail and multiple perspectives. He relived an incident from age eight when he deliberately mowed over his aunt's wildflowers, experiencing not only his own thoughts and the exact air temperature, but viewing the scene from hundreds of feet above as if through a camera. Most profoundly, he simultaneously experienced events from multiple viewpoints: his eight-year-old malicious self, his thirty-three-year-old perspective with accumulated wisdom, and as his Aunt Gay feeling her disappointment and humiliation when she discovered the destroyed flowers. He also experienced a divine perspective with unconditional love "only God's eyes, or the eyes of Jesus Christ" could provide, feeling no judgment despite the devastation he caused. In another recalled incident where he punched a man in a bar, he experienced being the victim, feeling the fist hit his face and his teeth going through his lip. The life review taught him that one judges oneself by fully experiencing the impact of all actions on others.
