Henry, a farmer in his forties suffering from severe depression after his mother's death, attempted suicide at a cemetery by shooting himself under the chin with a .22-caliber rifle. The bullet tore through the right side of his face but miraculously missed his brain. At the instant he pulled the trigger, the cemetery vanished and he found himself in a lush meadow of wildflowers where he was met by his deceased parents with open arms. His mother initially welcomed him joyfully, saying "Here comes Henry," but then her expression changed to concern and she gently rebuked him: "Oh, Henry, now look what you've done!" This brief encounter was the entirety of his otherworldly experience before he abruptly returned to his body in the cemetery, feeling the warm blood beneath his head. The experience had a profound therapeutic effect, completely eliminating his suicidal ideation and depression. He stated he was now happy knowing where his mother was and became eager to reassure other patients about the value and sanctity of life.
