Jim Puckett, 42, suffered severe burns from a gasoline explosion while lighting an outdoor fireplace, resulting in second and third-degree burns over 65% of his body. During Medivac helicopter transport to Doctor's Hospital in Augusta, GA, he clinically died when his heart stopped beating and lungs stopped breathing. He found himself submerged up to his chin in dark, murky, cold water at nighttime, trapped with countless hostile people inside a giant submerged fence. The environment emanated profound evil, with mean and agitated beings whose faces grew increasingly menacing. Unable to escape, he experienced complete helplessness, despair, and terror more intense than any previous fear, believing he was doomed to remain there for eternity. Questions raced through his mind about why he was there and how to escape. In this ultimate despair, he turned to prayer as his only hope, bowing his head and fervently asking God for another chance, promising with complete sincerity to become a better Christian, husband, and father. After this desperate plea, the experience ended and he eventually awoke from a two-month coma. He underwent seventeen surgeries including skin grafts and lung cleansings. No veridical observations of the physical world were reported; the entire experience occurred in what he identified as a hellish otherworldly realm. A neighbor paramedic later confirmed the severity of his condition, stating he never expected Jim to survive the helicopter ride. The experience profoundly transformed him, giving him a renewed sense of purpose to share his story and become the better person he had promised to be.
