An Englishwoman, twelve weeks pregnant, was hospitalized due to a threatened miscarriage. Shortly after being placed on a saline drip, she experienced a severe medical crisis, losing all signs of blood pressure and pulse. The medical team immediately responded to her life-threatening condition, working frantically to stabilize her as she appeared to be dying.
During this crisis, she had a profound out-of-body experience, finding herself in the top left-hand corner of the room against the ceiling, looking down with remarkable detachment at all the people fussing around her body. She realized she must be dying but felt oddly unconcerned. She then experienced traveling through a long, dark tunnel at tremendous speed toward a bright light at the end. The light grew brighter as she approached and eventually enveloped her in what she described as a beautiful, bright, gentle light that was not frightening but beautiful. She found herself in an extraordinary garden with "myriads of flowers, the colors of which were magnificent and quite indescribable," with a stream running through it and a beautiful arched bridge. In this realm, she encountered her deceased mother and grandmother, who appeared young, beautiful, and "radiant with happiness." They came toward her with outstretched hands, smiling, and she went to meet them in what she described as a wonderful reunion. Though no words were spoken, she knew they were pleased to see her and that she had been expected. She also saw other deceased people she had known. The experience ended when her mother became detached from the group, shook her head, and waved her hand in a gesture like a windscreen wiper. At that moment, she heard the doctor say "She's coming round" and found herself back in her hospital bed. Her first words to the doctor were "Why did you bring me back?" This case demonstrates classic NDE elements including out-of-body perception, tunnel experience, encounters with deceased relatives, and a profound otherworldly realm, occurring during a documented medical crisis.
