Cheryl experienced a near-drowning incident as a child in 1961 or 1962 when a rubber dingy tipped in the middle of a lake. She was not wearing a life jacket while her friend was. Upon entering the water, Cheryl immediately had an out-of-body experience, observing herself drowning from high above with remarkable clarity and dispassion. She watched her arms flailing, saw air bubbles emerging from her mouth, and noticed the vivid color of her swimsuit. A bright spotlight-like light surrounded her drowning body, appearing to shine down from above. Throughout the experience, she felt completely dispassionate - neither afraid, curious, nor sad - simply observing the scene objectively. Her mother managed to grab her around the waist and pull her to the surface, saving her life. The experience left her with enhanced awareness and a lasting curiosity about its meaning.
