Elise, age 36, experienced a near-death episode following serious hemorrhaging after a hysterectomy. While attempting to get out of her hospital bed, weak and with a soaking wet nightgown, she collapsed. She found herself in a dark tunnel-like area with a light at the end, feeling as if she was being sucked into it at incredible speed like through a giant vacuum cleaner hose. The experience began with terror - she felt a tremendous cold wind against her body, tried to scream but no sound came out, and knew she was dying. She attempted to pray but could not think of any prayer. Despite trying to stop or turn around, she had no control over the situation as the pinpoint of light grew larger. Then suddenly, she was overcome by complete peace. The terror transformed into a feeling of ultimate safety, weightlessness, and profound love. She felt at one with all, experiencing great joy and peace of mind and body. She sensed a presence saying "You're safe now; don't be afraid; this peace will help you." She then returned to her body, though she questioned where she had been during the experience. The transformation from terror to peace left a lasting impact, with her stating that anyone who felt such peace would never want it to leave them.
