Curt Jurgens experienced a clinical death episode during heart surgery with Dr. Michael DeBakey. While looking at the glass cupola over the operating room, it suddenly turned glowing red and he saw twisted, grinning faces of the damned staring down at him. A transparent dome seemed to sink over him while enormous drops of fiery rain fell around him, growing into menacing flames. He felt indescribable despair, believing he would be cast into this sea of flames for eternity. The hellish vision was interrupted by a bright, shining light that conquered the flames - a vision of his wife Simone. A dark figure wearing a black veil approached, which he recognized as Death in womanly form, with a lipless face bearing a dreadful smile. The phantom of his wife came to rescue him from hell, and Death departed powerlessly against Simone's radiant life force. She led him back by the hand through the fearful realm of shadows toward a great light that grew so bright he had to close his eyes. He then experienced severe chest pain and returned to consciousness, finding his wife sitting on his bed in a white nurse's uniform. This intensely distressing hellish NDE during cardiac surgery featured vivid imagery of damnation and salvation through love.
