A 48-year-old man attempted suicide by hanging himself from a utility shed in his backyard. His feet hit a broken lawn chair which prevented his neck from breaking, but he strangled in the rope. His heart stopped and breathing ceased, confirmed by his wife who was a nurse. During this clinical death, he experienced an out-of-body state where he saw his physical body hanging in the rope. He was surrounded by invisible demons that chattered like blackbirds, creating intense terror as they seemed to have eternity to drag him to hell. He described it as the worst kind of hell - trapped between two worlds, wandering lost and confused for eternity. Desperate to return to his body, he ran to his house and passed through the door without opening it. Unable to make his wife hear his cries, he entered her body and experienced shared consciousness, seeing and hearing through her senses. Through this connection, he influenced her to say "Oh, my God!" and take action. She grabbed a knife, ran outside, and cut him down. The emergency squad confirmed his heart had stopped and he had no breath. This hellish NDE with demonic torment and the unusual element of consciousness merging with another person represents a profoundly distressing near-death experience.
