Don Piper experienced a catastrophic head-on collision with an 18-wheeler and was pronounced dead at the scene for ninety minutes. Following the crash, he found himself standing in heaven, enveloped by a brilliant light beyond earthly comprehension. In front of a brilliant, ornate gate, a large crowd rushed toward him - his "celestial welcoming committee" who were smiling, shouting, and praising God as they waited for him. He instantly knew all of them were people he had known who had died during his lifetime.
The first person he recognized was his grandfather, Joe Kulbeth, who looked robust and strong as he embraced him tightly. The crowd surrounded him with hugs and handshakes, and he had never felt more loved. He saw his childhood friend Mike Wood, who had been influential in his becoming a Christian and had died in a car wreck at nineteen. Seeing Mike again, smiling brightly, wiped away all of Don's previous pain and grief over his friend's death. Among the welcoming committee were many others including Barry Wilson, a high school classmate who had drowned, and two influential teachers. The crowd consisted of people of all ages who had influenced his life. Though many hadn't known each other on earth, they all seemed to know each other now in heaven. As he approached the iridescent gate, which seemed made of pearl with a pearlescent quality like beautiful light, the music he had been hearing grew more vivid and intense. His welcoming committee, who had been in front of him, moved beside him, ready to walk with him through the gate. Just as he reached the gate with his senses overwhelmed by the experience, his awareness of heaven ended. The ninety-minute duration of clinical death and the detailed encounters with multiple identified deceased individuals provide significant context for this experience.
