Dr. Mary Neal, an orthopedic spine surgeon, was white-water kayaking in Chile when her kayak became lodged between boulders after going over a waterfall. She was trapped completely submerged under ten feet of water for fourteen minutes, experiencing broken bones and torn ligaments from the water pressure. Despite always fearing drowning, she felt no panic or air hunger during the ordeal. She surrendered the outcome to God's will and was immediately and physically held by Christ who reassured her that everything would be fine.
During her underwater experience, she felt more alive than ever before. As Jesus held her, He took her through a comprehensive review of her life. After fourteen minutes underwater, her body broke free from the kayak and tumbled through the rapids. At this point, she felt her soul release from her "heavy outer layer" and rise above the river. She was joyously greeted by a welcoming committee of beings in robes who were "exploding with pure love." She knew with absolute certainty that she had known and loved these beings for as long as she had existed. The beings hugged and danced with her, and the feeling of love was palpable and exponentially more intense than any earthly love. She and her companions began gliding along a path toward her eternal home. Looking back, she glimpsed the riverbank scene where her physical body had been recovered. She saw her body as "the shell of a comfortable old friend" and felt warm compassion for it. She observed her friends Tom and his sons looking sad and vulnerable, and heard them begging her to take a breath. Not wanting her friends to be sad, she asked her heavenly companions to wait while she returned to her body to take a breath for them. This observation of the rescue scene from outside her body, including the specific emotional states and verbal pleas of her friends, represents a veridical element of her experience that occurred while she was clinically dead underwater.
