Vicki, twenty-two years old and blind since birth, experienced a severe van crash resulting in a basal skull fracture and broken back and neck. She was treated at Harborview Medical Center where she had an extraordinary near-death experience. During the event, she found herself floating above the accident scene, experiencing sight for the first time in her life. She observed the crumpled van from above, then later found herself near the ceiling of the hospital room watching medical staff work on her body below.
She recognized her own body by her long hair and distinctive wedding band with orange blossoms engraved on it. She heard doctors discussing their concern about potential eardrum damage that could cause deafness in addition to her blindness. When they stated "We can't bring her back!" she felt detached and thought "I'm out of here," immediately ascending through the ceiling. She experienced a panoramic view of the hospital roof and city lights, feeling exhilarated by the freedom of movement. Vicki was then pulled through a dark tube toward a brilliant light, hearing sublime music that transitioned into songs of praise. She emerged in a place of tremendous light where she lay on grass surrounded by trees, flowers, and countless people. The light conveyed love and seemed to permeate everything. She was welcomed by five deceased acquaintances including two blind schoolmates who appeared healthy and in their prime, her childhood caretakers Mr. and Mrs. Zilk, and her grandmother. A being of greater radiance whom she recognized as Jesus appeared, embraced her, and she could feel his beard and hair. Jesus communicated telepathically that it wasn't her time and she must return to "learn and teach more about loving and forgiving." She experienced a complete panoramic life review from birth with gentle commentary to help her understand her actions' significance. Her return was marked by "a sickening thud" as she re-entered her body, feeling heavy and full of pain.
