In autumn 2009, Nigel Mumford contracted H1N1 swine flu, leading to respiratory arrest and ICU admission. Doctors placed him in a chemically induced coma with ventilator support and paralyzing medications for 19 days. His condition deteriorated to total organ failure, sepsis, and collapsed lung, with doctors telling his wife on October 23 they had done all they could. During this critical period, he experienced being "out of my body, traveling—mostly to heaven" through five vivid visions more real than dreams.
His visions began with a single blade of grass expanding to reveal a glass house where he drank "living water" from a golden chalice. He then ascended into space witnessing the "Book of Life"—a massive luminous book containing stars representing souls. His most arduous vision placed him crawling through the "valley of the shadow of death," repeatedly encouraged by silent visions of Jesus Christ on the Cross whose compassionate eyes urged him past Hell's dark pillars toward Heaven's brilliant white gates. In the fourth vision, he waited disappointedly at an empty table in heaven's "briefing room" for the Lord who never appeared. His final vision showed an aerial view of his Father's house—a serene landscape of Victorian homes and gardens connected by railway. The primary veridical element occurred during preparation for tracheotomy while comatose. He perceived this as a terrifying "green killing table" funeral scheduled for 10 a.m., sensing it was 9:30. Years later when writing, he asked his wife the procedure's scheduled time—she confirmed 10 a.m., validating his temporal perception despite deep coma and demonstrating some awareness level however distorted through fear and medication. After waking partially paralyzed from the 19-day coma, his recovery was long and marked by depression. However, the visions provided unshakeable conviction in the afterlife's reality, completely removing his fear of death and transforming his faith from intellectual assent to absolute experiential certainty, becoming cornerstone to his healing ministry.
