Fr. Stephen Scheier, a priest for twelve years, suffered a catastrophic head-on collision on October 18, 1985. His scalp was torn off the right side of his head, brain cells obliterated, and neck broken at C-2 (hangman's break). Doctors gave him only 15% chance of survival. Multiple Christian churches opened for all-night prayer vigils. A Mennonite nurse at the scene helped him pray the Hail Mary as he passed in and out of consciousness.
During his unconscious state, Fr. Scheier found himself before the Judgment Seat of Jesus Christ. They went through his entire life with him saying "Yes" to every accusation - he could give no excuses when talking to Truth itself. Jesus pronounced his sentence as Hell, to which Fr. Scheier agreed it was deserved. He had been a priest for himself, not for Christ, lacking true contrition in confessions and using the sacrament as "fire insurance" without firm purpose of amendment. Then he heard the Blessed Mother's voice: "Son, will You please spare his life and his eternal soul?" Jesus replied she should let him reap what he deserved after twelve years of selfish priesthood. Mary persisted: "But Son, we can give him special graces and strengths and then see if there's fruit. If not, Your will be done." After a pause, Jesus said: "Mother, he's yours." Fr. Scheier realized this matched the Gospel parable of the fig tree being given one more year to bear fruit. He miraculously recovered, wearing a halo brace for five months. Later during Mass, the Gospel page about the fig tree became illuminated and flew at him, triggering his memory of the judgment experience. From then on he belonged completely to Mary, understanding that the Trinity cannot say no to her. His priorities shifted entirely to saving souls, living for eternity rather than earthly happiness.
