Fr. Cedric Pisegna, a 20-year-old college student who had fallen away from the Catholic Church, experienced an out-of-body experience while lying on his living room floor watching a Red Sox game in July 1977. Despite not being near death physically, he felt himself being pulled through a tunnel-like passageway against his will, experiencing a complete loss of control as he was drawn toward God.
The tunnel experience was vivid and disorienting, like a wormhole or amusement park ride tunnel. He sensed it was round about him and felt powerless to resist the magnetic propulsion pulling him forward. At the end of the tunnel, he found himself bathed in brilliant light - more brilliant than looking at the sun with eyes closed. The light was alive and embraced him physically. He experienced waves of God's glory as thick horizontal lines constantly running upward through him, like waves through a flag. The glory was rhythmic, powerful, and produced pure bliss and ecstasy. Standing before God's throne, he experienced the Beatific Vision with complete happiness for the first time. He couldn't think independently but was possessed by God's peace. He distinctly remembers thinking "He loves me so much it's scary" due to the overwhelming intensity of God's love. The experience convinced him he needed to be justified and had been a priest for himself rather than for God. After returning to his body, Fr. Cedric experienced the same out-of-body journey a second time, which he believes was given to verify the truth of the first experience. These experiences led him to become a priest and dedicate his life to sharing what he learned about death and the afterlife.
