Dr. Yvonne Kason was five years old when she had her first of five lifetime NDEs at a Swiss train station while visiting grandparents with her family. Not holding a parent's hand, she saw a station worker jump across the railway tracks and decided to imitate this playful action. As she leaned forward to jump, time suddenly stopped as if life was a movie and someone pressed pause.
Her consciousness left her body and she found herself 20-25 feet above the scene, observing that a train was rapidly approaching and would hit her. From this elevated perspective, she clearly thought "Oh, I see! That train is going to hit me!" yet felt no fear, only complete calm. An adult's hand grabbed her mid-jump and pulled her back to the platform just as the train whisked past her face. The experience left lasting aftereffects. Young Yvonne became convinced she could fly, having what she now recognizes as probable OBE dreams of flying down streets and to the schoolyard. Starting kindergarten that fall, she told a friend she could fly and attempted to demonstrate by jumping off a fence, feeling confused when she fell instead of flying. She never told anyone about the experience as a child, thinking she'd done something wrong. Only as an adult NDE researcher did she recognize this as her first NDE - featuring the classic elements of time distortion, out-of-body experience, and supernatural peace during mortal danger. She went on to have four more NDEs, co-found Spiritual Awakenings International, serve as IANDS President, and become a leading NDE/STE researcher and author.
