A soldier died in a mysterious plague that Pope Gregory described as "arrows from heaven" striking people. He experienced being carried out of his body, lying void of sense. He saw a bridge over a black smoky river with intolerable smell. Beyond lay green meadows with sweet flowers and companies of men in white like armies. He saw shining mansions, one especially magnificent with golden bricks being built by those he had helped in life. Near the river some houses were touched by stinking vapors, others not. The bridge was a trial - the wicked fell into the dark river while the just passed securely to pleasant places. He saw Peter (Gregory's steward) bound in iron in a filthy place as punishment for cruelty. He saw a priest cross safely. He witnessed Stephen attempting to cross but slipping, with demons pulling him down and angels pulling him up, the outcome unknown when the soldier returned to life. Gregory interpreted the bridge as the narrow path to life, the river as worldly corruption, and the vapors as carnal sins affecting even good works.
