St. Teresa of Ávila at age 22 suffered a seizure on the Feast of the Assumption and remained unconscious for four days. Her Carmelite sisters prepared her grave, performed funeral rites, and covered her eyes with wax. Her father alone refused burial, claiming to feel a faint pulse. Upon awakening, she asked "Why did you call me back?" and spoke of seeing Hell, Heaven, and Purgatory. She saw Hell as a long narrow passage like a furnace with filthy mud and wicked reptiles, experiencing fire within her soul. She was shown this would have been her fate without conversion. She mentioned future convents and foundations to save souls. She remained paralyzed for nine months, unable to move except one finger, until healed through St. Joseph's intercession on Easter. Later she experienced the transverberation - an angel pierced her heart with a golden spear of divine love. Her incorrupt heart still shows this wound today. She also received visions of Heaven with light that knows no night and the glorified beauty of Christ that no imagination could conceive.
