St. Paul was stoned to death at Lystra by Jews from Antioch and Iconium. They stoned him inside the city according to formal execution procedures, then dragged his lifeless body outside supposing he was dead. The disciples gathered around him in prayer and he rose up, entering the city the next day. This was the only biblical account of surviving stoning. Fourteen years before writing 2 Corinthians, Paul was caught up to the third heaven and Paradise, whether in or out of body he knew not. He heard things that cannot be told which man may not utter. He experienced being beside himself with abundance of revelations. The timing suggests this occurred during the stoning at Lystra. Paul describes himself as often near death, beaten, stoned, shipwrecked. The phrase "rose up" used for his recovery parallels the resurrection language used for Jairus's daughter. His experience of Paradise gave him a thorn in the flesh to prevent pride. He became the apostle to the Gentiles with numerous missionary journeys following this event.
