Monk Peter lived in a monastery founded by Pope St. Gregory the Great. He was struck dead by an unknown sickness and found himself surrounded by the torments and innumerable places of Hell. He saw many mighty men of the world hanging in flames. As his soul was being carried down to be thrown into the same fire, just as he felt the first flames, an angel in beautiful attire plucked him from the pit. The angel told him to go back and carefully look unto himself regarding how he leads his life. Peter returned to life as his body gradually became warm. The experience transformed him completely - he became a hermit in the desert of Evasa, binding himself to fasting, watching, and silent prayer. His life thereafter spoke to the torments he had seen and feared. Gregory wrote that God's providence worked in his temporary death so that he would not die everlastingly. The angel's message to examine his life represents the singular message of every NDE.
