Jonah, fleeing from God's command to preach to Nineveh, was thrown overboard during a storm and swallowed by a great fish. He died and descended to Sheol, the realm of the dead, for three days. From the belly of Sheol he cried out to God, describing being cast into the deep with waters closing over him, weeds wrapped around his head at the roots of mountains. He went down to the land whose bars closed upon him forever - a clear description of death and the underworld. God brought his life up from the Pit after three days. When the fish vomited him onto shore, God said "Arise" - the same word used for resurrection. This death and resurrection after three days became the "Sign of Jonah" that Jesus referenced as prefiguring His own death and resurrection. Ancient tradition holds this was Jonah's second resurrection, having been previously raised by Elijah as the widow's son. After rising, Jonah's preaching converted all of Nineveh. His NDE involved consciousness in Sheol with awareness of separation from God but maintaining faith and hope.
