Fr. Stephen Scheier, a priest for 12 years, suffered a head-on collision on Highway 96 in Kansas. His scalp was torn off the right side of his head with partial brain shearing, and he suffered a C2 neck break (hangman's break). Given only 15% chance of survival, multiple churches united in prayer. During his unconscious state, he found himself before the judgment seat of Jesus Christ. They reviewed his entire life with Fr. Stephen agreeing "Yes" to every accusation. Jesus pronounced his sentence as Hell, which Fr. Stephen accepted as just. Then he heard Mary's voice interceding: "Son, will You please spare his life and eternal soul?" Jesus initially resisted, saying the priest had served himself not Christ for 12 years. Mary persisted, asking for special graces to see if he would bear fruit. Jesus relented saying "Mother, he's yours." Fr. Stephen recovered miraculously, wore a halo brace for 5 months, and transformed into a devoted priest. The experience manifested later when a Gospel reading about the fig tree given another chance literally flew off the page at him during Mass, confirming his second chance.
