A 57-year-old man experienced cardiac arrest and clinical death during the AWARE study. After resuscitation efforts using an automated external defibrillator, he was declared dead but then revived. During his death state, he reported traveling through a tunnel toward an intense light that did not hurt his eyes. He encountered other unrecognized people in the tunnel and emerged to witness a beautiful crystal city with a river of crystal-clear water running through its middle. Many people without distinct faces were washing in the waters, appearing very beautiful. He heard the most beautiful singing that moved him to tears. He also experienced an out-of-body perspective, observing events from an upper corner of the room during his resuscitation. He accurately described people present and specific activities including the use of the defibrillator. Upon return, he stated God had sent him back as it was not his time and he had many things to do. The experience matched biblical descriptions of the heavenly city with its crystal river flowing from God's throne.
