Dr. Kenneth E. Hagin experienced death three times at age seventeen while bedfast with two serious organic heart problems. At fifteen, doctors had given him absolutely no hope of survival. During his death experiences, his heart stopped beating and the spiritual man living in his body departed. He had proof he was actually dead. The experience occurred three times in one evening, each time with him descending to hell and being pulled back.
He went down, down, down until the lights of earth faded away. The farther down he went, the blacker it became, the hotter and more stifling. Finally, far below, he could see lights flickering on the walls of the caverns of the damned, caused by the fires of hell. The heat beat him in the face. Coming to the entrance of hell, he sensed that one more foot, one more step, one more yard, and he would be gone forever with no possibility of escape. At the bottom of the pit, he became conscious of a spirit being beside him. The creature laid its hand on his arm to escort him in. At that moment, a voice spoke from far above the blackness, above the earth, above the heavens. When the voice spoke, its words reverberated throughout the region of the damned, shaking it like a leaf in the wind and causing the creature to remove its hand. He began ascending until he reached the top of the pit and saw the lights of earth. This happened three times. The third time, he cried out that he belonged to the church and had been baptized, but realized this was insufficient. As he prayed "O God! I come to You in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ. I ask You to forgive me of my sins and to cleanse me from all sin," he was born again. Looking at the clock, it was 7:40 PM - twenty minutes before 8 o'clock, the very hour he was born again through God's mercy and his mother's prayers. He felt like a two-ton weight had rolled off his chest. He recovered from his heart condition, founded Rhema Bible Institute, and preached almost daily until going home to the Lord at an old age.
