Thomas Welch experienced one of the most well-documented cases of death and return in 1924 at a sawmill in Bridal Veil, Oregon. He fell thirty feet, landing on his head on a beam, then fell into the water and disappeared from view. The search continued for forty-five minutes to one hour before J. H. Gunderson found his body. He was completely dead as far as this world was concerned, having been underwater for at least forty-five minutes. During this extended time of death, he was alive in another world.
He found himself standing near the shoreline of a great ocean of fire, which appeared to be what the Bible describes as "the lake which burns with fire and brimstone." This was the most awesome sight he had ever seen. As far as his eyes could see, it was a burning, turbulent, rolling mass of blue fire. There was nobody in it at that moment. He saw other people whom he had known who had died, and they recognized each other. Their expressions were those of bewilderment and confusion. The scene was so awesome that words failed to describe it adequately. He realized there was no way of escape except by Divine intervention. He said audibly to himself, "If I had known about this I would have done anything that was required of me to escape coming to a place like this." Then he saw another man coming by - he knew immediately it was Jesus, with a strong, kind, compassionate face, master of all He saw. Thomas thought, "If He would only look my way and see me, He could rescue me from this place." Jesus turned His head and looked directly at him. That look was enough - in seconds he was back entering his body. Mrs. Brocke had been praying, "O God, don't take Tom. He is not saved." They saw his eyelids move, tears came, he tried to talk, and more life returned. The men standing around were amazed and happy - they had seen a miracle. At the hospital, they cleaned his head wounds, put many stitches in his scalp, and bandaged seven broken ribs on his left side.
