Jerry R. Newberry, at age fifteen in 1946, nearly died from acute appendicitis. Following surgery for his life-threatening condition, he experienced a profound near-death experience that would remain vivid in his memory for sixty years before he documented it. After the surgery, the lights above his bed slowly went out and he found himself entering a supernatural realm. A dim haze appeared and he could see a tunnel opening before him.
In the distance, he could hear people moaning, groaning, and wailing - a sound that filled him with fear. Two hooded beings appeared, one on either side of him, and he had never heard wailing of such magnitude. The sound was horrible and overwhelming. The smell was equally terrible, like many things burning together. His eyes burned, his nostrils burned, and his lungs burned from the toxic atmosphere. Walking through corridors, he saw countless thousands of people behind huge metal bars, screaming, crying, and calling for water, but no water was given. There was no relief from their torment and misery. The place was unbearably hot with total hopelessness and despair. He saw thousands upon thousands behind massive metal bars. The heat of the flames was intense, with no peace or joy - only misery and eternal death with no end. An angel told him "This was Hell, and it is deep, deep, deep." He felt an inexpressible urge to warn people not to go to that awful place. Then he heard a voice with total command and authority say, "He has to go back," and they made an about-face. When he opened his eyes, his mother and siblings were standing at his bedside. He knew he would never be the same again. The first Sunday he was able, he went to church and gave his heart to Jesus Christ. In 1989, visiting Hawaii's volcano crater, the sulfur smell confirmed his experience from 1946.
