In 1974, Bill Fishel was dying in a hospital when he experienced a profound near-death experience that would completely transform his spiritual life. As he lay dying, he became aware of moving rapidly through a very dark and dreary tunnel, spiraling downward under the crust of the earth. His immediate thought was confusion about why he was going downward rather than upward toward heaven. As he continued his descent through the darkness, he observed a faint light at the tunnel's end.
The light emanated from a large cavern somewhere deep in the earth, accompanied by intense heat. The ground was desolate and hard. People of various ages began appearing - souls and spirits of men and women from around the world who had just died and were drawn to this area before their final confinement. He watched in horror as these people fell headlong into a massive pit while a supernatural being directed them. A second angelic creature was casting people into this immeasurable opening. The canyon contained thousands of smaller pits, all burning with fire, from which arose a mighty chorus of moans and cries. There was depressing darkness above the hole and a strong odor of burning sulfur mixed with the sickening smell of burnt flesh. In his terror, Bill began crying out to God for mercy and help. Meanwhile, in the hospital, doctors and nurses were working to revive him and succeeded. As they brought him back, he felt himself being drawn upward through the tunnel back toward earth's surface. When asked about his spiritual state at the time, he admitted he attended church but wasn't living the life he should have been. After this experience, Bill was so profoundly shaken that he committed to serve the Lord and follow Him for the rest of his life. He remained faithful to this commitment until his death.
