Dr. Donald Whitaker, a PhD specialist in research science, was dying in the hospital from acute hemorrhagic necrotic pancreatitis, a condition with virtually no survival rate. As a successful atheist who had worked his way from Oklahoma welfare to becoming one of the most powerful men in his state, he had always rejected his Christian friend Ron's attempts to share faith with him. As he lay dying, he began to question what if the Christians were right about heaven and hell.
During the night, as he began to fade away, he experienced profound darkness that penetrated his very being. He left his body and found himself in a place of untold terror. The darkness was absolute and overwhelming, completely different from the warm, loving experiences others reported. He felt no warmth, no love, only terror, knowing that if he slipped all the way into this darkness, he would never return. He fought all night, desperately waiting for Ron to arrive. The experience transformed this staunch atheist completely. He knew with absolute certainty that he had been heading toward hell, a place he had never believed existed. When Ron finally arrived the next morning, Dr. Whitaker asked him to lead him in prayer to accept Christ. After his conversion, he felt wonderful, describing it as a two-ton weight rolling off his chest. His near-death experience had shown him the reality of the afterlife and the destination awaiting those who reject God. From that point forward, he became a believer and follower of Christ.
