On June 1, 1985, Howard Storm, a 38-year-old art professor, experienced a perforation in his duodenum while in Paris, France. He collapsed in excruciating pain in his hotel room and was taken to a hospital where he waited ten hours for surgery. During this time, his condition deteriorated to the point where he believed he was dying, having been told that with such a perforation, life expectancy was about five hours.
As Storm lay dying in the hospital bed, he suddenly found himself standing beside his bed, looking down at his own body. He felt more alive and aware than ever before, with all his senses heightened to an extraordinary degree. When he tried to communicate with his wife Beverly and roommate Monsieur Fleurin, they could not see or hear him. He then heard voices calling him from the hallway, and followed them into increasing darkness. These beings became increasingly hostile and eventually attacked him viciously in the darkness. They tore at his flesh and tormented him in what he recognized as a hellish realm. In his desperation, a voice from within told him to "Pray to God," and when he called out "Jesus, save me," a brilliant light appeared. The light was Jesus Christ, who rescued Storm from the dark beings and embraced him with overwhelming love. Jesus lifted him up and his torn body was miraculously healed. Storm was then taken on a journey where he met angels and experienced a comprehensive life review, seeing how his actions had affected others. The angels showed him future world events and taught him theological truths. They told him he needed to return to life to love others and share God's love with the world. Storm observed specific details during his out-of-body experience, including the exact appearance of the hospital room, the positions of people, and later experienced multiple angel visitations that were witnessed by medical staff reactions. After his NDE, Storm completely transformed his life, leaving his career as an artist to become a United Church of Christ minister, dedicating his life to sharing his experience and God's love.
