Darrell Pell, a 34-year-old grocery store manager awaiting heart transplant, suffered ten cardiac arrests over four days in the cardiac ICU. On Sunday morning July 31, 1994, at 9:50 AM, he went into ventricular tachycardia at 220 beats per minute. Despite being told to relax, he became cold, shivery, and sweaty. After breathing deeply three times through a mask, he lost consciousness while reciting Bible verses including John 3:16 and Psalm 23.
Everything became sky blue and he saw faces of loved ones racing by like a panoramic slideshow. Upon finishing the fourth verse of Psalm 23, he found himself at ceiling level with "the Lord Jesus Christ" - a figure with reddish-brown shoulder-length hair and blue t-shirt - whose left arm was wrapped around him. Below, he watched six medical staff shock his body with 360 joules. He observed specific details: Sandy the nurse in pink uniform at his right, the cardiologist and two others in green scrubs around his right leg, one in blue scrubs, and a male nurse in blue at the foot of the bed. He saw the balloon pump insertion procedure but heard only gibberish. During his third arrest, Jesus spoke a single word: "Go." Darrell immediately felt the shock and returned to his body. His first words to his wife Alison were "Don't worry about me. It's not so bad over there." The staff confirmed he quoted Scripture while unconscious. That night, Alison saw a light around Darrell and a figure she identified as Jesus kneeling on the bed with his hand on Darrell's heart. Darrell experienced a complete transformation, becoming deeply religious, joining the Christian Motorcyclists Association, visiting prisons, counseling juvenile delinquents, and working with dying children. He drew a picture of his NDE showing himself and Jesus above the doorway, which coincidentally aligned with the crucifix location in the room.
