Brent suffered a heart attack and cardiac arrest while cooking sausage at a Boy Scout pancake fundraiser on a Saturday morning. He immediately fell unconscious and was resuscitated by nearby paramedics. His wife accompanied him in the ambulance where she watched an EMT insert a long needle into Brent's heart to revive him. He regained consciousness in the emergency room and was transported to the coronary care unit.
About thirty minutes after arrival in the CCU, Brent heard a Code Blue called over the intercom for another patient. Then another Code Blue sounded, and he realized with shock that the team was running into his room. Despite his protests that they had the wrong person, he could not communicate. His mind was working clearly - he was trying to yell "Leave me alone!" and attempting to pull his pants up while they were being removed. He felt them push the resuscitation board under him, experiencing this as a slap-like sensation. After the board was placed, Brent experienced an immediate transition out of his body. All pain and emotional feeling disappeared, replaced by total peace and beauty. From above, he watched a man take the paddles, rub them together, and shock his body. He saw his body jump and lurch but felt nothing. He then had a conversation with a voice about whether he was dead, if they would succeed in saving him, and was told it was his decision. When he chose to return to be with his family and see his children through college, the voice said "Very well then, make it happen." He immediately woke up with all the pain returning, seeing a hairy-faced doctor close to his face saying "We've got him. We've got him." The transition from terror while conscious during the arrest to complete tranquility during the OBE was dramatic and memorable.
