Bobby Jean, in her early twenties and caught in a destructive marriage while dealing with her father's death, attempted suicide by taking a massive overdose of sleeping pills. She felt numbness overtaking her body as she lost consciousness. Her experience began with her spirit looking down at her completely stationary body, unable to move or make any sound despite wanting to cry. She knew she had died and felt sad initially.
Then the ceiling and roof lifted off the room, opening completely to the sky. A huge figure appeared whom she immediately knew was Jesus - a man in flowing white clothing, very bright, with the most kind and loving look. He spoke to her through his eyes rather than verbally, telling her how much he loved her. She felt love more strongly than ever before and wanted to touch him. When she reached up as far as possible, his arm extended down and his hand took hers. Instantly her spirit re-entered her body and she was able to weep, not sorrowfully but from the overwhelming feeling of love she had never experienced before. She remained in bed for hours afterward, bathed in warmth and love, feeling as if she was being cared for. The experience convinced her that she was able to love and care for her four-year-old son, contrary to what she had believed before. She recovered, divorced, remarried, and had no further suicide attempts in the 32 years since. Her second NDE occurred during hospitalization for carcinoid syndrome when she had an allergic reaction to iodine contrast. She observed her husband praying for hours beside her bed, asking forgiveness and for her return. Despite her deep family attachments, she felt totally indifferent to his suffering while out of body, traveling toward tremendous light and peace.
