Beau, a retired grocery store owner, collapsed at home while opening soup. His wife attempted CPR, followed by their son, until EMTs arrived. He was still in ventricular fibrillation when paramedics reached him. One defibrillator shock restored normal rhythm, but he remained unconscious for two weeks due to severe hypoxic brain damage.
During his unconscious state, Beau experienced going to hell initially, where he encountered his deceased brother-in-law who had been an alcoholic. He described hell as hot, uncomfortable, and seeming lower down. His brother-in-law appeared to be working there. Guardian angels then appeared - including his uncle, his wife's uncle, and his father's friend - all in spirit form like clouds. They told him a mistake had been made and he was to move up. He then encountered his father who seemed happy and working. They floated above his grandfather's property, seeing cleared fields and a bridge. He met relatives dressed in purple robes with gold glitter on the chest, introducing themselves and shaking hands. The guardian angel told him he had to return for his grandchildren and children. They informed him he would forget everything except two things: that heaven and hell exist, and that the Golden Rule will get a person to heaven. They said he would not be a preacher but an average Christian who could share his experience with believers. Upon awakening in the dark hospital hallway, Beau felt compelled to tell his experience. He called his preacher immediately. Despite being a backslider who had not been an outstanding Christian, he was certain of meeting his deceased relatives and the reality of both heaven and hell.
