Steve Sjogren underwent routine laparoscopic gallbladder surgery at a suburban Cincinnati hospital in December 1997. During the procedure, the surgeon accidentally pierced his aorta twice while making an incision, causing massive internal bleeding. His blood pressure dropped to 50/30 and his heart stopped for seven minutes. During cardiac arrest, Steve experienced an out-of-body experience, floating toward the ceiling and observing the chaos in the operating room from above. He heard God's audible voice saying "Don't be afraid. You have nothing to fear. It's all going to be okay." He could see medical staff performing chest compressions and observed specific details of the emergency response. A vascular surgeon was called and successfully repaired the aorta. Steve was moved to ICU where he remained aware despite being in a coma. He experienced multiple spiritual encounters including seeing four translucent deceased patients praying for him in a circle around his bed, later confirming their identities and causes of death with staff. An angel appearing as an African American nurse visited him three nights at 2:30 AM, though no such nurse worked at the hospital. After multiple surgeries, infections, and months of recovery, Steve survived but with permanent physical disabilities including nerve damage to his legs.
