Frank, who lost his sight completely in 1982 and cannot see anything including light or shadows, has had several OBEs since becoming blind. Around 1992, a friend was going to drive him to a wake and bought him a tie that morning, dropping it off without telling him the color or design. Frank got dressed, put on the tie, and while lying on the couch saw himself coming out of his body. He could see the tie he was wearing - it was red (rose-colored) with two gray circles and dots in the middle of the circles. When his friend returned to pick him up, Frank asked "Are the circles gray in this tie?" She confirmed they were and was surprised he knew, asking if anyone had visited. Frank told her he just guessed, not wanting to explain the OBE as he felt she wouldn't believe it. The tie became known for being beautiful with people often remarking on it. When researchers contacted his friend, she confirmed purchasing a tie that day and picking him up but couldn't clearly recall the sequence of events or exact design and colors. She said Frank doesn't embellish stories and thought he was probably accurate.
