Claudia, who lost her sight completely by age 5 and never saw well as a child, had an OBE during a rape assault when she was 36. During the attack, she found herself looking down at her body from above. She emphasizes this was not visual in the normal sense - she describes it as "almost like a tactile thing, except that there was no way I could have touched from up there." She believes she was on the lower bunk bed with the top bunk above, which should have blocked any view from the ceiling, yet she could perceive her body below. She described it as clear in that all details were there, but not with the sharp detail she remembers from limited childhood vision. It was "kind of like vision but it's not vision" - seeing without seeing, more like a general awareness or knowing what was happening without actually perceiving it in a way that conforms to ordinary sight. The experience had a tactile quality despite the impossibility of touch from that position.
