Marilyn, totally blind since age 5 following an unsuccessful operation for cataracts and glaucoma, had a heart attack at age 57. During the experience on what she believed was an operating table, she was conscious of people lined up in an operating room, though she explicitly stated this was not a visual picture. Her consciousness rose above where she had been lying and she perceived her body below appearing black and getting progressively blacker, which she interpreted as dying. She described this as a picture without vision, like being in the room without actual sight. Later she clarified it was like viewing from a camera positioned high above, seeing the outline of her body from below the face, with the body appearing black in varying intensities. She could detect the bed, wall position, and distance between her soul and body. She described this as a semi-visual impression combining actual physical features with symbolic meaning (blackness representing dying). She was adamant it was not mental creation but like being there, though not ordinary visual perception.
