Carla, severely visually impaired with ROP, underwent a hysterectomy in 1972. During surgery, she observed the medical team from above, seeing the anesthesiologist with white hair and moon-shaped face working the respirator, the telemetry screen on the ceiling with wavy columnar lines, and all staff wearing green surgical attire. She heard the anesthesiologist saying "This should not be happening. We're losing her." She then found herself in a bright white room where a spiritual guide showed her events from her life in a panoramic review, including childhood experiences at school where she could see herself on the playground and realized kids who teased her were actually bigger than her. She saw the green plants and lawns of her school campus with crystal clear vision, unlike her normal severely impaired sight. The life review included both visual and auditory elements of her experiences, showing her how she dealt with people throughout her life.
