On January 18, 1989, Don Piper was driving across a bridge over Lake Livingston in East Texas when an eighteen-wheeler truck struck his Ford Escort head-on at approximately sixty miles per hour. The impact was immediately fatal. Four EMTs pronounced him dead at 11:45 AM. His body remained trapped in the wreckage under a tarp for ninety minutes while authorities waited for the coroner. During this time, Piper experienced heaven.
Instantly after the collision, Piper found himself standing before one of heaven's twelve gates, described as sculpted from mother-of-pearl with an oyster-like appearance. He was immediately surrounded by a welcoming committee of people who had played significant roles in his spiritual journey on earth. Each person had either helped him become a Christian or strengthened his faith. Among them were his grandmother Nellie Piper, Mike Wood (a high school friend who died in 1968), Jan Cowart (who invited him to church at age sixteen), and others. All appeared perfect in form, ageless, and wearing luminescent robes. They greeted him with indescribable joy, calling him by name, demonstrating they knew he was coming. The sensory experience was overwhelming. Piper perceived colors never seen on earth and fragrances that permeated everything. The music was particularly striking - thousands of songs sung simultaneously to God without chaos, all flowing together symbiotically. He could distinguish each melody with his heavenly ears. Above all songs, "Holy, Holy, Holy" soared distinctively. Angels were everywhere, and he heard the whooshing sound of their wings. Through the gate, he could see a golden boulevard, magnificent structures, a river flowing down the street, and the tree of life. After ninety minutes, Pastor Dick Onarecker arrived at the accident scene and felt divinely compelled to pray for the deceased Piper despite police objections. During his prayers and singing of "What a Friend We Have in Jesus," Piper's spirit returned to his body. Dick checked for a pulse and found one, shocking the EMTs who had declared him dead. Piper survived with no brain damage and no internal injuries despite catastrophic external injuries including a severed femur and nearly severed arm.
