Don Piper, a Baptist minister returning from a church conference, was driving across a narrow bridge over Lake Livingston, Texas on January 18, 1989. An eighteen-wheeler driven by a prison inmate crossed the center line and struck his Ford Escort head-on at a combined impact speed of 110 mph. The massive truck crushed Piper's car between itself and the bridge railing. Emergency Medical Technicians arrived within minutes, found no pulse or vital signs, and officially pronounced him dead at 11:45 AM. They covered his body with a tarp while attending to other victims.
During the ninety minutes he was clinically dead, Piper experienced standing at the gates of heaven. A large crowd of deceased relatives and friends who had influenced his Christian faith surrounded him with overwhelming joy. He recognized his grandfather Joe Kulbeth, childhood friend Mike Wood who died at nineteen, great-grandmother Hattie Mann, teachers, and many others. All appeared perfectly healthy, radiant, and at the age he best remembered them. The environment was filled with brilliant, ever-intensifying light and indescribably beautiful music - hundreds of worship songs sung simultaneously, including familiar hymns and unknown melodies. He observed pearlescent gates and streets of literal gold beyond them. Meanwhile, Baptist minister Dick Onerecker, delayed in traffic from the accident, felt divinely compelled to pray for the dead man despite police insistence the victim was deceased. Dick crawled through the trunk into the crushed vehicle, placed his hand on Piper's shoulder, and prayed fervently while singing "What a Friend We Have in Jesus." After praying emotionally for several minutes, Piper suddenly began singing along with him. Dick scrambled out to alert EMTs who confirmed Piper's pulse had returned after ninety minutes without vital signs. Piper's injuries were catastrophic: his left leg nearly severed with four inches of femur missing, left arm severely damaged with missing bones, right knee crushed, and massive trauma throughout. Remarkably, despite the violent head-on collision, he suffered no brain damage or internal organ injuries. He endured 105 days of initial hospitalization, thirty-four total surgeries, and wore an Ilizarov external fixator for eleven months. His recovery profoundly transformed his perspective on life, death, and ministry.
