Seven-year-old Kristle Merzlock drowned at a YMCA birthday party in Pocatello, Idaho, after being accidentally pushed into the deep end of the pool. Unable to swim in deep water, she sank and lost consciousness after swallowing water. She was discovered floating face-down and showed no vital signs for nearly 20 minutes. Dr. Melvin Morse resuscitated her, performing nasal intubation and other emergency procedures. Her condition was critical with massive brain swelling, no spontaneous breathing, and severe acidosis.
During her NDE, Kristle found herself in darkness before entering a tunnel with brightly colored, illuminated bricks. Unable to walk, she crawled toward a bright light radiating love until a woman named Elizabeth appeared, identifying herself as Kristle's guardian angel. Elizabeth helped her through the tunnel into heaven, which appeared as a beautiful meadow with waterfalls and white fruit trees. She was greeted by deceased relatives including her Aunt Pat and grandfather Paul, plus two young girls named Heather and Melissa who said they would soon be born. Most significantly, Kristle met Jesus Christ and the Heavenly Father. Jesus held her on his lap with love while the Heavenly Father asked if she wanted to stay or return. When she chose to return for her mother, they instructed her to obey her parents and be good to ensure her return to heaven. Her veridical observations included accurately describing her nasal intubation (unusual for resuscitation), the bearded doctor (Morse), being moved from a large to small room for X-rays, and details later confirmed by medical staff. Miraculously, Kristle recovered completely within days despite the severity of her condition. Her case became the first scientifically documented childhood NDE, inspiring Dr. Morse's groundbreaking Seattle Study. The experience permanently transformed her life, leading her to become a clinical social worker dedicated to helping others, guided by the spiritual connection she maintained from her heavenly encounter.
