Five-year-old Yvonne Kason was visiting her grandparents in Switzerland with her family during summer vacation. At a busy train station, while her parents attended to her younger siblings, Yvonne observed a station worker jump across the railway tracks. Thinking this looked fun and wanting to imitate the adult, she leaned forward to jump onto the tracks, unaware that a train was rapidly approaching the station.
At the moment she began her jump, time suddenly stood still, as if her life was a movie and someone pressed pause. Her consciousness immediately left her body and rose approximately 20-25 feet above the scene. From this elevated perspective, she could clearly see the train speeding toward where her body would land, realizing with complete clarity that she was about to be struck. Remarkably, she felt no fear, only complete peace and calm while observing the imminent collision from above. The out-of-body experience ended when an adult's hand grabbed her small body mid-jump and pulled her back onto the platform just as the train rushed past her face. The experience was so profound yet confusing that young Yvonne never mentioned it to anyone, fearing she had done something wrong. The veridical aspect included her accurate out-of-body perception of the scene and the approaching train she could not have seen from her ground-level position. The experience had lasting effects on Yvonne's perception of reality. She became convinced she could fly, leading to recurring out-of-body experiences in dreams where she would fly through her neighborhood. This belief was so strong that she attempted to demonstrate flying to a kindergarten friend by jumping off a fence, expecting to soar but falling instead. This childhood NDE set the foundation for her lifelong interest in consciousness and spiritual experiences, eventually leading her to become a pioneering researcher in NDEs and STEs.
