Three-year-old Brian Sackett was traveling with his family from Minnesota back to Ohio in their Nash Rambler when a tragic accident occurred. While playing with his older brother in the backseat, Brian accidentally hit the front-opening door handle, causing the door to fly open. The wind immediately sucked him out of the moving vehicle, and he fell onto the gravel shoulder of the two-lane highway, landing directly on his head as the car sped away at 60 miles per hour.
A trucker driving behind witnessed the accident and saw Brian land head-first on the gravel shoulder, immediately losing consciousness. The trucker stopped and held the unconscious, bleeding child until his parents realized he was gone and returned. Brian remained unconscious during the 30-mile drive to the nearest town for medical help. During this time of unconsciousness, Brian experienced his NDE, though the full memory would not surface until decades later during hypnotic regression therapy. Brian's primary veridical experience was seeing a bright spiritual light accompanied by sensing a wise being within this light. This internal spiritual light was distinct from any external physical light. The experience left him with deep emotional and spiritual trauma that he would not fully understand until adulthood. Through hypnotherapy at age 40, he recovered memories of the crushing chest pain and the spiritual encounter, realizing the profound impact this early experience had on his life. The aftermath of Brian's NDE was complex and long-lasting. He internalized feelings of abandonment when his mother, fearful of his fragility, did not comfort him during recovery. This led to decades of feeling unloved and spiritually disconnected. However, through years of therapy and introspection, Brian eventually integrated the experience, leading him to become a clinical psychologist specializing in trauma, spiritual emergence, and transpersonal psychology.
