Henry, an elderly man with severe emphysema, was found unresponsive in respiratory arrest by his son Patrick. During CPR by his son and later by paramedics, Henry experienced a profound near-death encounter with his deceased brother Dennis, who had died six years earlier from pancreatic cancer. Dennis had been the rock of the family, and Henry had missed him terribly since his passing.
During the respiratory arrest, Henry felt light with a sensation of floating in a soft, comfortable darkness. He heard someone frantically calling "Dad, Dad, wake up" in the distance. A faint yellow light caught his attention, growing larger and clearer as it approached. The light appeared fuzzy at first but became increasingly clear as he focused on it. He then heard a familiar voice calling his name. Suddenly Henry was looking at his brother Dennis, who appeared healthy and strong as he used to be before his illness. Henry ran to embrace him, and could actually feel him physically. Dennis looked fantastic, with a kind look in his eyes, exactly as Henry remembered him. They stood together for an unmeasured time before Dennis gently pulled away, placed his hands on Henry's arms, and told him they would see each other again but not right now - both had work to do before they would be together again. Henry was disappointed about having to return, as his health struggles made each day difficult. However, the experience removed his fear of death completely. He knew Dennis was happy and well on the other side, and that they would eventually reunite. As he told Dr. Bellg, "I'm definitely not afraid to die now" and felt he needed to figure out why he had to come back.
