Chester, a 74-year-old retired foundry worker, experienced multiple cardiac arrests requiring resuscitation. During his first arrest in the emergency department, his consciousness shot out through the top of his head, observing the resuscitation from above. He saw a pastoral scene with rolling fields superimposed on the ER, and encountered a bright being who told him "Whoa, buddy, not so fast. It's not your time."
Once in the ICU, Chester discovered he could separate his consciousness from his body at will. He could move his awareness to different locations - beside the bed, upside down, or outside his room. He experimented with this ability, finding he could think himself to different positions. When medical staff approached, he would quickly return his consciousness to his body. He perceived himself standing at the head of his bed while his physical body remained sedated and connected to machines. Chester demonstrated remarkable veridical perception, accurately hearing conversations between his wife and daughter in the family waiting room about an unusual tree outside the window - its odd shape, fringy foliage, and reddish color. He heard his grandson playing with a new green tractor and blocks in the waiting room, details later confirmed by his family. These conversations occurred well out of earshot from the ICU. Following his recovery, Chester experienced dramatically enhanced sensory abilities. He could see clearly without his glasses and hear without his hearing aids for approximately three weeks. Colors appeared vibrant and alive, sounds had new dimensions. These enhanced abilities gradually faded back to his baseline deficits, requiring his glasses and hearing aids once again.
