Carl was parasailing over a deep freshwater lake when a strong crosswind caught him and sent him toward utility wires high on a bluff. He became entangled in the lines before falling out of his harness toward the water far below. Upon impact, he lost consciousness and began to drown. Two women who had been flirting with him earlier rushed to rescue him, pulled him from the water, and one who was a nurse began CPR as he had no pulse or breathing. During his unconscious state, Carl experienced floating up after hitting the wires, observing his own parasail still caught in the wires below him, and watching his own body fall into the water. He described seeing himself fall flat into the water and thinking "This is not going to be good." He then found himself staring up at the two women who had rescued him. Carl could not reconcile how he could have witnessed his own near-drowning from outside himself. Emergency responders stabilized him and transported him to the trauma center. The experience transformed his understanding of consciousness and its ability to function separately from physical bodies.
