Bob H experienced an NDE at a swimming pool in 1966 when his uncle jumped in beside him, pulling him underwater as he was surfacing. He ran out of air and inhaled water, leading to drowning and loss of consciousness.
During the experience, Bob found himself floating five to six feet above the pool, looking down at the scene below. He remembers saying aloud "I am all right" and feeling amazing with total joy and no pain. From his elevated perspective, he could see people gathered around someone on the sidewalk beside the pool, though he didn't recognize anyone or realize it was his own body they were working on. He describes a peculiar dissociation where he was still himself but didn't know "Bob" or identify with the body below. The only veridical observation was his out-of-body view of the rescue scene from above the pool. He could see and hear everything happening below, which he finds inexplicable given his unconscious state. The experience lasted approximately six to seven minutes. Bob experienced significant pain when returning to his body, which he understood as "the pain of life."
