At nine months old, Mark had severe bronchiolitis and experienced full cardiopulmonary arrest in the emergency room. Doctors worked for over forty minutes to revive him, ultimately succeeding. Despite the extended resuscitation, he made a full recovery with normal growth and development. Mark first mentioned his NDE at age three following a Christmas pageant, saying God didn't look like the man in the play.
Mark described seeing nurses and doctors standing over him trying to wake him up. He flew out of the room to the waiting room where he saw his grandparents crying and holding each other, thinking he would die. He then encountered a long, dark tunnel and began crawling up it. Despite difficulty crawling without help (though he couldn't identify who helped), he was drawn by a bright light that motivated him to continue. The tunnel was challenging to navigate, but the bright light at the end kept him going. At the tunnel's end, he found a bright place where he ran through fields with God. He was very animated describing this, stating that one can "double jump in heaven" and run without effort. God asked if he wanted to go back home. Mark said no, but God told him he would return another day. Mark remembered the experience vividly until age five when doctors removed his tracheostomy tube for floppy windpipe. The memory then began fading, possibly because the tube removal signaled his subconscious he was no longer in danger. Now a well-adjusted teenager, Mark hopes to become a physical therapist or athletic trainer.
