Seven-year-old Kurt had severe muscular dystrophy requiring oxygen from a tank to breathe. He became progressively sicker and developed pneumonia, which typically marks the end of an MD victim's life. While in intensive care, his heart stopped. Doctors performed closed heart massage, pushing on his chest with their palms, and restored his heartbeat after three minutes without pulse.
When interviewed hours after resuscitation, Kurt was at peace, knowing he would die soon and seeming relieved that his physical grief would end. His recent experience had shown him a world without pain. When his heart stopped, Kurt found himself outside his body watching doctors and nurses work to revive him. He specifically saw Bonnie, one of the nurses, and said "hi" to her. Everything then became dark until he saw angels. He found himself in a beautiful place with flowers and rainbows where everything was white, as if having its own light. He talked to several people there, including Jesus, who wanted him to stay with him. Kurt wanted to stay but they decided he had to return to see his parents again. He expressed no fear about returning to that place. Kurt was too weak to draw what he had seen and died a few weeks after the interview. The medical staff present during his interview later anguished over not sharing his experience with his family, feeling that knowledge of his heavenly vision might have comforted them facing their son's imminent death.
