Eight-year-old June nearly drowned in a swimming pool when her hair became caught in the drain. Her parents, an emergency medical team, and emergency room doctors administered CPR for more than forty-five minutes before her heart began beating again. She made a full neurological recovery in less than six weeks despite the extended period without heartbeat.
June's experience only came to light during a later incident when she was riding her bicycle and her mother called out for her to be careful. Distracted, June rode into the street and was almost hit by a car. She then shouted to her mother asking if she wanted her to die again, warning she might not come back next time. This alarmed her mother enough to seek psychiatric help, leading to a referral to Dr. Morse. June described her hair getting stuck in the drain and blacking out. She then floated out of her body, able to see herself underwater but feeling no fear. She suddenly started ascending through a tunnel, finding herself in heaven where everything was bright and everyone cheerful. A nice man asked if she wanted to stay there. Though she considered it, she ultimately said she wanted to be with her family and was allowed to return. June retained full recall of the event and could remember all details of the resuscitation from the paramedics in the backyard to the emergency room procedures. Her experience left her understanding the temporary nature of death and the importance of choosing life with family.
